How Hair Transplants Work
WHat is involved in a hair transplant & is it safe?
Q. How exactly do hair transplants work?
A. It's a quick, painless 3-7 hour procedure where hair healthy hair is removed from the back or sides of the head and placed strategically on the top. The donor area scar is small and is usually not even visible to the eye. The new hair is gauranteed to grow for the rest of your life! That's it!
Q. When is a good time to get a hair transplant?
A. When you look at yourself in the mirror, do you ask yourself "is this how I want to look?" You have had the problem for a while and it is not going to get better or go away on its own. If you really want results, then do something and take control of the situation. Everyday you wait to do something about it is a day lost from looking the way you want to look.
Today, hair transplants give such a remarkably natural and permanent result that you should not put it off. You can enjoy the benefits now.
Q. Is the procedure painful?
A. Dr. DiIenno (pronounced "Dee-n-o") carefully uses a local anesthethic at the beginning of the procedure, making the rest of the procedure virtually pain free. You'll be awake, reclining comfortably in an imported, cushioned, surgical chair. You may watch your favorite movie, television program, or listen to music. Many patients, because they are so comfortable, actually fall asleep during the procedure.
Q. How many grafts will I need?
A. Everyone's need are different. In meeting with you, Dr. DiIenno will be able to tell you how many grafts and/or how many sessions it would take to achieve the look you want and what can realistically be achieved. Up to 1,800 grafts or more per session can be performed. Whereas numbers of grafts are important, sheer numbers of grafts are far from the only determining factor in acquiring the look you want. You must also have a surgeon who appreciates the artistry involved, one who recognizes natural hair growth patterns, and one who has the skill to reproduce it.
Q. How will my head look right after the procedure?
A. Your hair and scalp will be carefully washed immediately after the procedure. Each individual graft will then be thoroughly rechecked by Dr. DiIenno before you leave. The area form which the grafts were taken (the donor area on the back of your head), is also washed and rechecked, and is usually visually undetectable. So when you leave the office your hair and scalp will be clean without bandages.
